Pursuant to Regulation 21 of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, the National Environment. Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed project. The proponent, National Housing Corporation, is proposing to construct a fourteen-storey residential building (ground floor plus 14 floors) comprising of 182 units. The building will comprise 180No. one bedroomed units, 2No—studio/commercial units, walkways, gate- house, landscaped gardens, courtyards, driveways, parking, and other associated facilities and amenities on Plot L.R. No Eldoret Municipality block 11/42 in Uasin Gishu County. Solid waste • All wastes shall be handled in accordance with generation the provisions of EMCA, Waste Management Regulations, 2006. • The proponent shall contract aNEMA licensed waste handler for proper waste disposal. • Regular collection of wastes for disposal at designated sites. • Prohibit littering by construction personnel. • Construction.waste will be recycled or reused. • The contractor shall designate on-site waste storage areas, provide adequate amount of waste storage facilities, and protect stored wastes from potential runoff by rain or wind. The proponent, Wiro Ventures Limited, is proposing to establish an asbestos disposal landfill on a bare piece of land of approximately 237 hectares on plot L,R. No. Matsavini 2-Tsangatsini in Mariakani, Kilifi County. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measure: Impacts Proposed Mitigation Measures Biodiversity • Preserve as possible indigenous trees and other surrounding vegetation that need not be removed. Air quality • Establish air quality monitoring systems. • Implement operational management plans to ensure that the system is being maintained properly. • Appoint a dust monitoring system to monitor and analyse dust and air quality. • Air monitoring should be done continuously in areas related to asbestos removal works. Storm water • Ensure all storm water from the site is directed management towards the established water drains. • Asbestos disposal site shall be marked clearly as hazardous material. • The asbestos will be appropriately contained and sealed to minimize exposure. • The asbestos prior to removal should be treated with a wetting agent to minimize asbestos dust. • Asbestos should be handled and disposed by skilled and experienced professionals. • The removed asbestos will not be reused. • The disposal and cleaning activities should be limited from 7 a.m. or sunrise (whichever is later) to 5 p.m. or sunset. • The company shall not permit any person to work in an environment in which he or she would be exposed to asbestos in excess of the prescribed occupational exposure limit. • The contractor will employ workers from the immediate area to avoid social conflict. • Workplaces to be maintained in a clean state and are free of asbestos waste. • Inspections should be done to ensure that temporary storage site is cleaned to a satisfactory standard. • Training on the potential health risk caused by exposure to asbestos and how to reduce these risks.
