Pursuant to Regulation 21 of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed project. The proponent, Reale Hospital Limited, is proposing to develop a hospital which shall comprise a 3No. storey building consisting of well-equipped operational theatres, accident and emergency centres, laboratory, cold room and vaccination services and a car park among other necessary facilities and amenities on plot No. Nandi/Kamobo 6840 along Kapsabet—Kisumu Road, approximately 1.5 km from Kapsabet town in Nandi County. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: • Establishment of flower gardens and lawns around project site. Air quality • Sprinkle water during construction work. • Control of speed and movement of construction vehicles. • Use of low-sulphur diesel for diesel-operated machinery. • • Switch off machines when necessary. Liquid waste • Proper connection of waste water and sewerage management system to existing county council system as per approved design. • Provision of storm water drains. • Proper decommissioning of waste water and sewerage system. • Proper maintenance of the drainage system. , Solid waste • Provision of waste collection bins. management • Re-use of soil, construction debris and other reusable waste. • Proper containment and disposal of solid waste. • Contracting a licensed waste collection and disposal company. • Creation of awareness on proper solid waste disposal. Noise and • Use of ear protection aids by construction excessive workers. vibrations Construction to take place only during the day. Use of attenuated equipment. Impacts Vegetation Impacts Occupational health and safety Proposed Mitigation Measures • Planting grass to cover open/bare-grounds. • Maintaining trees in areas not affected. • Proper landscaping. • Use specialized equipment to minimize damage to tree roots. • If possible, plant new trees on approved public land to replace the trees cut down at the project site. Proposed Mitigation Measures • Use of suitable personal protective equipment (PPE). • Use of stable ladders and other clirr ibing/support structures. • Sensitize workers on construction safety measures. • Cleanliness and organization at the construction site. • Fencing or covering of risky areas such as deep pits. • Safety signage. • Use of permit-to-work authorizer for risky jobs. • Engagement of skilled labourers Insurance for workers if possible. Fire hazards and • Acquire firefighting facilities/equipment. accidents • Sensitize workers in fire safety. • Avoid storage of flammable substances on the project site. • Keep well stocked first aid kits. • Proper handling and use of tools and machinery.
