Pursuant to Regulation 21 of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations. 2003, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed Project The proponent, Athi Water Service Board, is proposing to improve Githunguri sanitation project. This project will comprise of 2No. outfall sewers to drain approximately 90% of the Githunguri urban area, a new 2900m3/day Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP), a new network for the two catchments, and other associated facilities and amenities in Githunguri Constituency. Impacts Proposed Mitigation Measures Liquid wastes • Contaminated water should be directed to a conservancy tank for removal from the site. • Poiential pollutants of any kind shall be kept, stored and used in such a manner that any escape can be contained. • No grey water runoff or uncontrolled discharges from the site or working areas. Hazardous wastes • Ensure that the machines and equipment are in good condition to prevent oil pollution. • Ensure proper handling of lubricants, fuels and solvents during maintenance. • Any chemical or fuel spills shall be cleaned up immediately. • Proper storage of fuel, oil and bitumen. Public health and • Ensure proper and periodic maintenance of safety sewer lines and treatment plant. • Create awareness among the community members to not dump solids in manholes. • Develop an inventory system of the components for monitoring. • Regular cleaning of grit chambers and sewer lines. • Design manhole covers to withstand anticipated load and ensure that broken covers are readily, replaced. Occupational health • Provide workers with PPEs. and safety • Provide temporary toilets and bathrooms for the workers at the work sites. • Provide onsite first aid kit accessible to the workers whenever needed. • Control persons allowed to access the site for their safety. • Provide Health and Safety Plan prior to the commencement of work. • Adhere to the provisions of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations of 2007.
