THE JUDICIAL SERVICE ACT
APPOINTMENT
PURSUANT to Section 3, Part Il, First Schedule of the Judicial
Service Act, 2011 the Judiciary declares twenty (20) vacancies in the
Office of Judge of the Environment and Land Court.

Period of Service: As per Article 167 of the Constitution
Functions:
A Judge of the Environment and Land Court shall serve in any
Environment and Land Court station in Kenya and shall exercise the following functions:
Have original and appellate jurisdiction to hear and determine all disputes relating to environment and the use and occupation of, and title to, land;
Hear and determine disputes relating to:
(A) environmental planning and piotectiOn, trade, climate issues, land use planning, title, tenure, boundaries, rates, rents, valuations, mining, minerals and other natural resources;

land administration and management;
public, private and community land and contracts, choses in action or other instruments granting any enforceable interest in land; and any other dispute relating to environment and land.
(c) Hear and determine applications for redress of adenial, violation or infringement of, or threat to, rights or fundamental freedom relating to a clean and healthy environment under Articles 42, 69 and 70 of the
Constitution
(d) Exercise appellate jurisdiction over the decisions of subordinate courts or local tribunals in respect of matters falling withinthe jurisdiction of the court, Co,zstititio,tal and Statutory requirements/or Appointment
For appoilEment to the position of Judge of the Environment and Land
Court, applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications:
(a) Hold a law degree from it recognized university, or bean advocate of the High Court of Kenya, or possess an equivalent qualification in a coinmon.ltsw jurisdiction.
(6) I-hive tstJeast ten (10) years' experience as a Supei'ior Court
Judge or professionally qualified Magistrate in'esective of whether that experience was gained in Kenya or in another commonwealth eornmon=lttw jurisdiction; or
- (e) Have at least ten (10) years' experience its it distinguished - academic or legal practitioner with knowledge and experience In matters relating to environment and land or such experience In other relevant legal field Irrespective of whethet' that experience was gained in Kenya or in another comnionwenith eommonlnw jur14idirtion; or
Id) Have held the qualifications specified in paragraphs (b) and
(c) for a perIod amounting, in aggregate, to ten (10) yeats c) (lava it high moral character, integrity and impartiulity
(f) Meet The requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and integrity.
Notes.
() Experience gained in Kenya or in another Commonwealth
Country with a common law jurisdiction will be considered. -
(ii) Knowledge and experience in Environmental and Land matters will be an added advantage.
In addition, the applicants must demonstrate a high degree of professional competence, communication skills, fairness, good temperament, good judgment in both tegal and life experiences and commitment to public and community service.
The appointments shall be made in accordance with Articles 166 (1)
(b) (2) (5), 162 (2) (b), the First Schedule of the Judicial Service Act, No. I of 2011 and Section 7 of the Environment and Land Court Act;
