GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 11130

Pursuant to Regulation 21 of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed project. The proponent, Gingalili (1968) Limited, is proposing to construct a mixed use facility comprising of residential, commercial, educational, five star hotel and an office block on both sides of the Nakuru–Nyahururu Highway, B5 between Maili Saba and Maili Tisa. The entire project spreads over 692 acres. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures Impacts Proposed Mitigation Measures Soil erosion • Control earthworks. • Management of excavation works. • Construction of appropriate drainage structures. Noise pollution and vibration • Erect signs indicating construction activities. • Ensure maintenance of all equipment. • Use of attenuated equipment. • Use barriers to shield compressors and other stationary equipment where necessary. Impacts Proposed Mitigation Measures Dust from construction activities • Provide workers with appropriate PPE. • Sprinkling water to control dust. • Use of dust screens where appropriate. Health and safety • Provide appropriate PPE to all workers. • Use trained workers for all the tasks at the site. • Ensure that a crew member is trained in first aid administration and basic fire fighting. • Place a fully equipped first aid tool box in the project site. Solid waste generation • Setting contracts with licensed waste collectors. • Practise waste segregation and recycling of recyclable waste. • Separation of waste and refuse at the source. • Sensitization training for cleaning team and tenants with the view of maintaining environmental sustainability • Using recycling bins with clear separation in public areas. For example different coloured bins for different types of waste. Social-economic impacts • Employment of people from the neighbouring areas. • Develop a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for the community. Energy Consumption • Greener designs which maximize use of natural day light without increasing the ventilation load. • Use of natural ventilation wherever possible and solar shading. • Use of renewable/low carbon technologies such as solar water heating, photovoltaic and ground coupled water cooling systems where possible. • Use of building management systems. Water Resource • Rain water harvesting. • Put in place appropriate measures to ensure water conservation and sustainable use of available water resources. Accidents/Injuries • Put clear and adequate signage next to and along the road leading into the site. Traffic • Construction vehicles to transport materials to the construction site during off peak hours. • Put adequate signage on the construction site.
