PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of the proposed Rehabilitation and Augmentation of Nyahururu Cluster Water and Sanitation Project. The Proponent (Northern Water Services Board) of the proposed Rehabilitation and Augmentation of Nyahururu Cluster Water and Sanitation Project is proposing to carry out construction and supervision of Nyahururu Clusters Water and Sanitation project. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Possible Impact Mitigation measures Conflicts with existing sanitation amenities • Involve the community groups on suitable site. • Selection and level of responsibility. Potential risks to water quality from catchment degradation • Initiate a process for catchment rehabilitation in collaboration with relevant authorities and the local communities. Loss in dam capacity from siltation and invasive weeds • Address urgently the risks of siltation of the dam from the land use practices in the area. Potential for interference with recharge to Manguo swamp and Ewaso Narok River downstream. • Monitor on continuous basis the effects of the galleries to downstream surface flows and condition of Manguo swamp. Risks of interfering with immediate shallow wells • Undertake full EIA study upon identification of specific borehole locations on the area for approval by NEMA and no objection from other stakeholders. Possible un-sustainability of the communal watering points (water kiosks). • With the support of relevant authorities to gradually stop illegal water connections and vending to enhance sustainability of the water kiosks. Water losses from inefficient use and leaking taps at user points. • Ensure all water pipelines and taps are maintained leak-proof at all times. Nuisance from spilt water along pipelines and at draw points. • Maintain records on water (bulk meter readings) for communal water kiosks, volume dispensed per day and sales volumes.
