PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of the proposed G20 Amboseli Golf Resort, Hotel and SPA. The proposed development will include putting up a Golf Resort and SPA. Upon completion, the Golf Resort and Spa will comprise of 100 rooms Golf hotel, 300pax conference facility, a Spa, shareholders’ cottage, club house, water pans/small dams and staff quarters. The proposed Golf Resort and SPA project will be on land parcel number Kajiado/Kaputiei South/2694. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Possible Impact Mitigation measures Air quality • Ensure that all material (sand and aggregate) stockpiled on the site to be used in construction activities are regularly sprayed to reduce the effects of wind whipping. • Ensure that all trucks carrying aggregate and sand are covered during delivery to the site. • Ensure that all machinery and vehicles used in the maintenance of the golf course are regularly maintained. • Implement a traffic system that involves appropriate signals and signs to ensure the smooth flow of traffic must be implemented. Vegetation disturbance • Only clear vegetation that is absolutely necessary for the construction activities. • Retain all mature trees (> 25 cm diameter at breast height (DBH)) during this phase of the development. • Determine access roads which are to be used by machinery. • Reduce edge effect and habitat loss by physically delimit the remaining neighbouring forests. • Establish ‘no-spray’ zones throughout the golf course, especially in the remaining vegetated areas of the golf course. Occupational safety and health • Workers on site must be provided with appropriate PPE. • Appropriate signs must be erected on the site to warn workers and visitors. • There should be safety policy clearly displayed on the site. 23rd March, 2012 THE KENYA GAZETTE • Machines should be properly maintained. • A first aid kit should be provided and a trained first aider should always be on site. Dust emission • Ensure strict enforcement of on-site speed limit regulations. • Avoid excavation works in extremely dry weathers. • Sprinkle water on graded access routes. • Personal Protective equipment to be worn. Noise and vibration Machinery, vehicles and instruments that emit high levels of noise e.g. drills; graders and cement mixers should be used on a phased basis to reduce the overall impact. • Workers, especially those working with machinery, vehicles and instruments that emit high levels of noise should be supplied with ear plugs and ear muffs. • Temporary barriers such as earth bumps, zinc fencing and sound dampening fencing such as acoustic screens should be employed. • Construction hours should be limited to the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily. Soils and geology • Areas storing hazardous substances such as diesel must be properly contained in a bunded area. • Ensure that general refuse is collected regularly and is transported and disposed of appropriately at the designated disposal site. • Develop and follow an Integrated Pest Management Guidelines. • Prevent the contamination of soils by the designation of a maintenance area for the maintenance of vehicles and other equipment. Water resources • Irrigation systems must be regularly checked. • Reduce the level of irrigation on all unused or minimally used areas of the property. • Ensure that all areas of the golf course are lined with geotextile material to prevent the contamination of ground water in the area. • Maintain a vegetation buffer around natural environments to reduce the nutrient loading to these waterways.
