PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority, (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed mixed development-housing apartments, commercial centre and community facilities. The project will have 14 No. high rise blocks of apartments comprising of mix of 1/2/3 bedrooms totalling to 2,530 No. housing apartment units. The proposed site is on Plot LR No. 11329, off Thika Road, Kasarani, Nairobi. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: THE KENYA GAZETTE 12th August, 2011 Potential Impacts Mitigation Measures Distortion of neighbourhood architecture, aesthetics and image  Harmonize building scale with existing development in neighbourhood. Destruction of natural environment and vegetation  Development restricted to approved density Provision of green open space with grass and tree cover. Increased water demand  Develop roof rainwater harvesting facilities.  Sinking of boreholes to complement city water supply. Increased waste water Production  Provide connection to municipal sewer line  Develop adequate sewerage system Increased surface water runoff  Provide adequate storm water drainage system.  Improve drainage and cleaning up of seasonal stream. Increased solid waste production  Waste be disposed off at designated disposal site.  Recycle material such as paper and plastic containers. Increased vehicular and pedestrian/cycle traffic  Provide paved access road network and vehicle parking.  Provide 1.5- 2.0m wide paved walk/cycle way network Increased electricity demand  Connection to city electricity supply line and sub-station/generator installation.  Provide solar system for lighting and water heating. Increased worker Accidents, fire risks and health risks  Provide workers with protective clothing and head gear.  Enforce occupational health and fire safety standards. Increased human population and conflict  Project will generate a lot of income and employment.  Provide community services- schools, health clinic, shopping centre, and recreation. Air pollution and dust generation  Use of dust nets to reduce spreading out of generated dust.  Sprinkling of water on dusty spots.  Use of well maintained vehicles and machinery. Oil leak and spills  Provide adequate servicing of vehicles and machinery.  Provide adequate storage of petroleum products and oil interceptors. Noise and vibration  Avoid use of explosives in construction works.  Heavy machinery and vehicles be noise insulated.
