THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT
(No. 8 of 1999)
REGULATION
PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact
Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment
Management Authority, (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed multi-user residential housing development.
The proposed multi-user residential housing development project comprises of seventy seven (77) four-bedroom single-storey units.
The proposed site is found at Syokimau, off Mombasa Road, Mavoko Municipality, Machakos District within plot number
12715/617, measuring 2.025 hectares.
The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures:
Possible impacts Mitigation measures
Discharge of domestic wastewater from the housing estate
Construct on-site compact domestic effluent treatment plant that meets prescribed NEMA discharge standards.
Regularly monitor efficiency of the plant by testing samples for compliance.
Traffic safety during construction
Erection of clear traffic warning signs about the hazard on both sides of the road to Syokimau.
Construction work safety Provide safe working conditions and tools including personal protection wear for workers.
Public safety around site Fence off the entire site with a perimeter wall and no entry for unauthorized people.
Deforestation and environmental degradation at source of construction materials
Source construction materials especially quarry stones, timber and sand only from compliant or licensed dealers.
Dust emission during construction
Use water spray to suppress dust.
Public health and communicable diseases
Liaise with Municipal Health Officer to sensitize workers about infectious diseases especially HIV AIDS.
Solid waste disposal Recycle, reuse and where not possible store waste in suitable bins and use only
NEMA Licensed waste disposal firms.
Site sanitation Provide clean running water and a temporary sanitation system for site hygiene.
Vegetation cover reduction
Plant trees indigenous to the area and flowers.

(c) Provincial Director of Environment, Eastern Province.
(d) District Environment Officer, Machakos District.
The National Environment Management Authority invites members of the public to submit oral or written comments within thirty (30) days from the date of publication of this notice to the
Director-General, NEMA, to assist the Authority in the approval process of the project.
