PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority, (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed atlas petrol station. The proposed development entails construction of a petrol station and ancillary facilities. The Proposed Petrol Station is Located along Kawangware Road off Naivasha Road in Kawangware Estate on plot LR. NO. Dagoretti/Riruta/4286. The site is directly opposite Kenya Bus Service Limited Yard in Kawangware along Kawangware road. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Possible Impact Mitigation Measures Solid waste Segregation of solid waste and collection into bins should be observed. Disposal of waste should be done through the laid down council procedure. Reuse where possible or sale to authorized waste handlers/collectors. Occupational heath and safety All workers will be provided with protective clothing i.e. overalls, helmets, gloves and safety boots among others to guard against injuries and other bodily harm. Clean water will be provided to the workers for drinking. In the unlikely event of accidents, the labour laws governing reporting and management of the same i.e. OSHA 2007, will be applied. Adequate safety signs will be provided on site to prevent all workers and the general public of any dangers. Adequate lavatories will be provided for both ladies and gents separately. Speed limits will be observed and designated entry and exit routes observed without exception. Air and noise pollution Limiting construction traffic movement and operation to efficient and necessary activities. Routine maintenance of vehicles and other machinery to be used during construction process to reduce any chances of emissions. Minimizing transportation activities to day time only. Limiting construction activities to day time only. Sprinkle the construction site with water to keep dust levels down. Disturbance of soil Excavating only necessary areas. Containment of soil heaps to prevent erosion caused by runoff. Reduce the use of heavy machinery whenever possible. Use of light machinery at the site during construction process. Re-vegetate exposed areas on the site through proper landscaping. Effluent discharge Effluent discharge shall be channeled to the main sewer line that serves the area. All waste oil must be reduced to harmless state through an oil interceptor before being discharged into the sewer system. All effluent to meet NEMA standards for discharge. Ecosystem disturbance Ensure proper demarcation and delineation of the project area to be affected by construction works. 4th March, 2011 THE KENYA GAZETTE 629 Possible Impact Mitigation Measures Designate access routes and parking within the site. Preserve the existing trees within the project site and if possible plant more trees of fast maturity period within the site. Design and implement an appropriate landscaping programme to help in re- vegetation of part of the project area after construction.
