GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 217

PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) regulations, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed Sagana Gateway. The proposed development entails establishment of a tourism and conference facility with 38 cottages, each with a capacity of 6 rooms, and 40 small housing units for staff. It also aims to put up a conference facility. The construction of the proposed project will however be phased, with the first phase seeing the establishment of 12 cottages. An additional 7 cottages will also be built in this phase. In the second phase, an additional 19 cottages and the staff housing units will be put up. All this units will be linked to septic tanks. The facility shall also have a central kitchen and dining facilities. The proposed lodge is located in Muranga South District off the Nyeri-Nairobi Road on the road to Camp Malta and Maragwa Ridge. The proposed project is sited on 37.7 hectares piece of land on LR. No. 27593/6 and one end of the property touches the Saba Saba River before Sagana River Bridge. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures Environmental Impacts Mitigation Measures Increased soil erosion • Minimal clearing of vegetation. • Afforestation. • Storm water channelled to the dam. Increased solid wastes • Wastes composted. • Other wastes burnt. • Others wastes recycled. Contamination of Surface Water • Septic tanks. • Siting of septic tanks away from river • Septic tanks monitored closely. • During construction, workers provided with a pit latrine located away form the river and which will be decommissioned. Contamination of ground water • Septic tanks lined with waterproof cement to contain any seepage. Increased noise • Construction works undertaken during the day. • Modicum of silence will be maintained during operations. Increased dust • Road will be water during construction. • Road paved during operations. Impact on wildlife • Solid waste bins and disposal points covered. • Visitors educated against feeding animals. Over extraction of Water • Installing water meter. Off-site impacts • Materials bought from known sustainable sources. HIV/AIDS • Contractor required to sensitize workers on HIV/AIDS.
