REGULATION
NOTICE is given that applications under section 18 (2) of the
Mining Act have been made by Joseph Ndimau Mutwanthei, of P.O.
Box 26239-00504, Nairobi, Kenya for an exclusive prospecting licence to prospect for iron ore over an area described in the schedule hereto and the said application has been accepted for consideration.
By virtue of section 7 (1) (d) of the Mining Act, the said areas of land are therefore excluded from prospecting and or mining except as regards any prospecting and mining righti granted in respect of the area in question or any part thereof before the date of this notice which are subsisting or any right of renewal thereof.
Any objection to the grant of the exclusive prospecting licence may be made in writing and addressed to the Commissioner of Mines and Geology, P.O. Box 30009-00100, Nairobi, Kenya to reach him within thirty (30) days from the date of publication of this notice.
SCHEDULE
An area of approximately 7136 square kilometre situated in Taita
Taveta District of Coast Province, delineated on Maktau topo sheet
Ref No. 189/3 of scale 1:50,000 and more particularly described as follows:
Commencing at point "A" grid reference DG 022250; thence on a grid bearing of 360° frit a distance of approximately 1.8 km to point
"B" grid reference DG 022268; thence on a grid bearing of 90° for a distance of approximately 1.7 km. to point "C" grid reference DG
038268; thence on a grid bearing of 360° for a distance of approximately 9.2 km. to point "D" grid reference DG 038360; thence on a grid bearing of 90° for a distance of approximately 6.2 km. to point "E" grid reference DG 100360; thence on a grid bearing of 180 for a distance of 11.0 km. to point "F' grid reference DG 100250;
thence on a grid bearing of 270 for a distance of approximately 7.8 km. to thee point of commencement.

FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROPOSED
MENENGAI GEOTHERMAL DRILLING PROJECT
INVITATION OF PUBLIC COMMENTS
PURSUANT to Regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact
Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment
Management Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed
Menengai Geothermal Drilling Project.
The proposed project will entail harnessing the geothermal energy through drilling and testing 3 explorations, 6 appraisals and about 27 production geothermal wells within the caldera floor. The main objective is to prove availability of geothermal steam from construction of 140mw Menengai I geothermal power plant to be commissioned in 2013.
The project encompasses Menengai area, Ol'rongai plains and parts of the Solai graben, in Nakuru District.
The project anticipates the following impacts and migration measures:

•Notify the public through local community leaders of possible disturbance.

Public health and safety • Reduce dust emission levels through regular watering of opened grounds.
•Reduce noise levels.

•Prohibit construction activities at night.
•Provide standard facilities for solid waste disposal and sanitation.
•Provide workforce with portable water.
•Monitor quality of water, air, dust and noise levels.
Visual intrusion and • Use colours that camflouge the aesthetics surrounding areas for water pipelines, drilling and well discharge test equipment.
•Restore/rehabilitate/re-vegetate all work areas acceptable standards.
•Control clearing of vegetation.
•Ensure proper disposal of construction debrils.
Flora and fauna
• Locate steam pipelines so as avoid palatable vegetation.
•Re-inject all brine and condensates.
•Control clearing of vegetation.
•Rehabilitate and re-vegetate all disturbed areas with endemic plant species.
•Locate drains and steam pipelines so as to avoid obstruction to small animals.
•Control movement of construction traffic.
•Control construction activities to limit habitat loss.
Solid waste
• Proper waste disposal including construction debris.
•Constructor will leave site clean and slightly condition on completion of works.
•Monitor segregate, store and dispose all solid waste generated outside the forest.
Oil pollution
• Installation of oil interceptors in all storm water drainage around
