PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed Organic Solutions Limited. The proposed project interAs to introduce Organic Solutions Primary (OSP) (beneficiary Micro-organisms) to manage environment and agriculture by development of products that utilizes the Microbial Technology against the chemical based approach. The project will be conducted by organic solutions located in Westlands, Nubui House, opposite Unga House. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures: Possible impacts Mitigation measures I. Environment health • Mitigating of environmental pollution and safety and degradation. •Decomposition and recycling of wastes, both solids and liquids.. •Processing organic waste to create a rich compost to facilitate crop growth (biofertilizers). •Waste from the application used as organic fertilizers. 5. Water resources • Promote the reuse of waste water. •Utilized as bio water treatment. •Reduce the utilization of chemicals in water treatment. 6. Uncertainties • It is often difficult to consistently reproduce their beneficial effects. •Introduction of species or certain generic substances with intention to alter the system. •Public perception on use of micro- organism. •Beneficial micro-organism must be used diligently and with care, as per guidelines. 7. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED EAST AFRICA. SUBMARINE CABLE' SYSTEM (EASSY) PROJECT TELECOMMUNICATION TRAFFIC FROM AFRICAN COUNTRIES (BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICA AND SUDAN) AND LINK TO THE REST OF THE WORLD INVITATION OF PUBLIC COMMENTS PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed East Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSY). The EASSY Submarine Fibre .Optic Cable extends from about I 89km offshore (at 2,300m depth) to landfall in Mombasa. The cable yin 'be laid in deep water by a special cable laying vessel and from about 10 km. offshore will need to be buried in the sand, by process called "ploughing". The cable will pass through the main channel entrance to Mombasa, up to Todor Creek and come to land at a location adjacent to Fort Jesus on Mombasa. Island, where an existing cable conduit is found. From here, the cable will run through to the Telkom Kenya premises at Telephone house at the City Center through underground cables. The project anticipates the following impacts- and mitigation measures. . Possible impacts Mitigation measures 1. Marine ecology • Control of sediment disturbance. •Minimizing disturbance to associated marine life. •Minimizing the timing and extent of the works. -• Monitoring during cable laying to ensure the areas identified are protected from impacts as far as possible. •Restoration of the damaged areas as quickly and as as possible. 2. Terrestrial ecology • Minimize the time and extent of disturbance. •Avoid carrying out -works in wet or windy conditions. •Erect barriers to stop drift during works if necessary. •Control of degradation during construction within dunes, - 3. Fisheries • Inform the relevant parties not less than 30 days before the project commence, so That they can inform the local fishing industry. •Provide the relevant parties with the Mitigation measures planned route co-ordinates for comment. •Notify the relevant parties of the period of installation. •Include personnel who can communicate with local fishermen. •Avoid excavation during dry windy conditions. •During dry seasons, vehicle use and speed will be minimized, •Stockpiles of dry loose material will be covered with tarpaulin and secured. •Watering down the dusty areas will be practiced where necessary to reduce blown dust. •Where the wind direction results in dust blown towards sensitive receivers, barriers will be reserve. •Use of luieter methods and equipment for works. •Reducing the time for equipment use. • Minimizing concurrent operation of several noisy items of equipment. •Use of barriers to protect nearby sensitive receivers from works. •Reducing traffic.onsite. •Separate waste into recyclable and non- recyclable sections if recycling is an option. •Store disposable wastes in one area and regularly remove from site. •Designate areas for eating and sanitary facilities and manage appropriately. •The works area should be restored to its original state after works are completed. •Carry—out work outside of wet seasons as far a possible. •Where run-off is likely to occur, establish a drainage system that allows run-off to enter depressions and settle. •Manage the settlements areas to, avoid overflows. . •Cover areas of stockpiled materials. •Identify the type of impact. •Evaluate the degree of impact. •Assess whether the impact can be avoided e.g. relocating the cable or using different cable laying methods. •Where avoidance is uncertain or impossible, a specialist in the relevant area should be contacted. •Minimize the time and 'extent of the works. •Maintain a tidy site. •Change to the Terminal Station buildings, if required, should be designed and excavated with considerationto the surrounding visual. •Where trees and other vegetation are removed or impacted, they will be replaced and restored to the original conditions after the works are completed. •Avoid involuntary resettlements or at least maintain good communication with the interested groups and stakeholders of Possible impacts 4.Dust 5.Noise 6.Waste 7.Run off 8.: Cultural heritage 9.
