FOR THE PROPOSED THREE K'S EPZ LIMITED, CHANGAMWE, MOMBASA
INVITATION OF PUBLIC COMMENTS
PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact
Assessment and Audit) Regulatidns, the National Environment
Management authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed Three
K's Limited.
The proposed project will entail establishment of recycling of lead.
The project process will involve buying of old car batteries, battery breaking, lead extraction, smelting, moulding and packaging of lead for export.
The project is located at L.R. No. 567, Mainland North, Changamwe, Mombasa.
The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures:

1. Air emissions
• Control particulate emissions using electrostatic precipitators, bag filters, scrubbers, cyclones that are appropriate for the exhaust steam characteristics.
•Install gas scrubbing processes that remove SO2 from low concentration streams and use oxy fuel burners resulting in reduced NOx formation.
•Collect and treat acid mist generated in the milling stages of battery breaking.
2. Wastewater
• Direct contact cooling water should be routed through the facility wastewater treatment system.
•Reductions in effluent toxicity using appropriate technology e.g. reverse osmosis.
3. Residues and waste • Process large quantities of slag produced at the smelting stage to produce inert granular material that can be sold for industrial use such as cement manufacturing.
•Recycle anode and tank bottom sludge for residual metals recovery.
•Recycle waste from abatement systems, and sludge from leaching and wastewater treatment into pyro- processing stages.
4. Occupational health • Install and maintain fire fighting and safety equipment machinery
•Carry out fire drills regularly
•Monitor worker exposure using personal occupational hygiene sampling devices
•Provide local exhaust ventilation to limit exposure to toxic emission such as SO2, CO and H2SO4 mists.
•A program for regular sound monitoring by measuring exposure levels should be established
