PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environment (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulation, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received and environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of the proposed Xiang Hui International. The proposed project will entail establishment of an industry that will involve: Collection of old batteries; Crushing to separate lead plates and plastic housing; Smelting of.the lead and casting into ingots; Breaking lead into granules followed by crushing to lead powder; Making-of lead plates and conditioning for lead plates; Battery assembly and selling The project will be located at Northern side of Nakuru town within the Industrial Area on L.R. No. Nakuru Municipality/Block 8/67. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures: Possible Impact Mitigation Measures 1. Water quality Ensure acceptable solid waste degradation collection systems from sources, storage arrangements and transfer to Possible Impact Mitigation Measures dumping sites. Engage qualified waste handing contactors. Develop appropriate site documentation and waste manifest for waste collected and disposed. •Ensure containment of solid waste leachates and run off in the scrap batteries and old tyres yard. •Establish engineered containments pre- treatment for liquid effluents from all point sources around the premises. •Install oil and grit interceptor and grit traps at the exits of all the drains and channels. •Slab the scrap batteries and old tyres holding yards and install traps for any leachates and surface runoff. •Ensure efficiency at the acid water neutralization area at all times. 2. Air Pollution All stacks be fitted with appropriate facilities to intercept gaseous emissions, Maintain records of the Air Quality within and around the premises for continuous improvement •Install dust bags at lead smelting areas and the melting furnaces to intercept fly ash and lead dust Collect and keep covered lead and fly ashes from the furnace to prevent it from blowing into the air 3.Noise Undertake noise level measurement at different locations around the plat and establish a noise mapping around the plant precincts before and upon commissioning. 4.Biological diversity • Ensure solid refuse handlers dispose into approved grounds to avoid biodiversity degradation. •Plant trees on the open spaces continuously. 5. Health and safety • Provide all workers with the necessary personal protective equipment. •Mark gangways on the floor and prevent obstruction of the same. •Enhance good . hygiene practices to reduce exposure of the employees and customers to infections. •Provide suitable signage for fire escapes and convenience directions. •Develop a disaster management manual on health safety and security issues, among them fire accidents. Train workers on disaster response. •Undertake schedule fire safety drills. 6. Solid waste • Develop a procedure for waste management segregation on site. •Contracts with external waste recyclers and handlers with conditions on waste transfer and verification of final disposal. •Collect lead dross and dust for secure storage awaiting recovery and or safe disposal, The full report of the proposed project is available for inspection during working hours at: (a) The Director-General, National Environment Management Authority, Kapiti Road, off Mombasa Road, P.O.
