THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT

(No. 8 of 1999)

PURSUANT to regulation 21 of Environment (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of proposed Kenya—Uganda Oil Pipeline Extension Project. The proposed project entails the designing, developing construction and operation of a ten (10) inch diameter pipeline starting from Eldoret in Kenya to Kampala in Uganda for a total distance of 352 kilometres. The Project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures. Possible impact Mitigation measures 1. Loss of habitat • Controlled work activities in sensitive areas. •Replanting where need be. •Obtain license to undertake construction trough forests. 2. Impacts on wildlife • Sensitize workers on wildlife. •Restrict vehicular transport in wildlife areas. 3. Impacts on river • Use horizontal building technology banks and water as opposed to open cut method. pollution • Carry out regular surveillance for oil leaks in rivers crossed. •Develop stringent spill control and recovery measures. •Adequate compensation on any land acquisition. (d)District Environment Office, Nairobi District NEMA invites members of the public to submit oral or written comments within sixty (60) days from the date of publication of this notice to the Director General, NEMA, to assist the Authority in the approval process of the project B.
