GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 1739

THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT

(No. 8 of 1999)

PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the. Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an environmental impact assessment study report for the implementation of proposed Tongwe Mara Camp on L.R. No. CIS Mara/Talek/96 at Narok. The, Proposer] project will comprise of the construction of thirty (30) tented camp. The intake of the project is located outside the Mimi& Mara Game Reserve, about 6 kilometres from the Talek Town, in Koiyaki Group Ranch, Narok South District. The project anticipates the following, impacts and mitigation measures: Possible impacts Mitigation measures I. Water quality • The proponent is entitled to apply for the waste disposal licences. •There will be need for stringent treatment of effluent. 2.Air quality • Dust emissions during construction may be reduced using biodegradable hydrant and sprinkling of water on the surface. 3.Waste water collection • Ensure minimal obstruction to storm water flow and prevent surface run-off from entering the sewers •Provide fixed and permanent monitoring points for sampling and install a gauging system for monitoring volumes of waste water. •Wastewater pre-treatment systems (if any) should be isolated and fenced off for restricted access. 4. Noise pollution • Use of serviced and greased equipment to reduce noise. •Ensure use of ear muffs by operators 5. Biological diversity • Lawns and gardens to be planted with diverse vegetation species. •The riparian strip will also be enriched with indigenous tree species. •Adhere to eco-tourism principles The full report of the proposed project is available for inspection during working hours at: (a) Director-General, National Environmental Management Authority, Kapiti Road, off Mombasa Road, P.O. (e) Provincial Director of Environment, Rift Valley Province. (d) District Environment Officer, Narok North District. The National Environmental Management Authority, invites members of the public to submit oral or written comments within thirty (30) days from the date of publication of this notice to the Director-General, National Environmental Management Authority, to assist the authority in the approval process of the project.
