THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO- ORDINATION ACT

Pursuant to Regulation 21 of Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of proposed Water Supply and. Sanitation Program Nzoia Cluster Phase II (Kakamega, Busia,. Nambale). The proposed project consists of construction of new intake works on River Yala, new water treatment plant, rehabilitation of water treatment facilities, laying of raw and treated water pipelines, new water storage reservoirs, water kiosks, rehabilitation and drilling of new boreholes, expansion of sewer line networks, rehabilitation and expansion of sewerage stabilization ponds and on-site sanitation works. The intake of the project is transversing the districts of Kakamega, Busia and Nambale towns. The project anticipates the following impacts and mitigation measures:- Possible Impacts ) Mitigation'Measures 1.Habitat loss. Replanting of indigenous plants could be implemented after the project. 2.Air quality. A water bowser would be used to minimize dust on all murram (dirt) roads. The contractor to be encouraged to, use unleaded and low sulphur content petrol for all equipments and vehicles.
