PURSUANT to regulation 21 of the Environmental (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the implementation of proposed Lamu Queen Hotel, Mande Island. The proposed project consists of the development of a tourist venture within the Island of Manda. The intake of the project is to be on L.R. No. 22987, Ras Kitau, Manda Island, Lamu District. The project anticipates the following, impacts and mitigation measures: Possible Impacts Mitigation Measures 1. Disturbance of the mangrove • Proponent proposes to maintain ecosystem the road that separates the plot from the mangrove forest to act as a buffer zone. •Proponent proposes to maintain a mangrove nursery on the project site that will be used in replanting. •Proponent proposes to engage measures to ensure no wastes are dumped in the forest. Possible Impacts Mitigation Measures 2. Liquid wastes • Proponent will install small treatment works on the site. •Proponent to reuse some of the treated water in watering gardens at the hotel and in the washrooms. •The sludge that remains after treatment will be re-used as manure for the gardens. 4. Accumulation of sand/soil • Proponent will spread all the during excavation sand/soil on the beach shore near 30 metres high water tank. •Proponent will use part of the sand/soil to fill up some of the trenches created during the excavation for foundation. •Proponent proposes to plant mangrove trees on the spread out sand to aid in reduction of beach erosion. 5. Access route to the beach • Proponent will reserve both sides of the project plot a path of 4 metres width. •Proponent will place at both ends of reserved path a sign board to prepare people on the existence of an access route to the beach. 6.High brine water levels during • Pour such water into the ocean the desalination process since the chemical composition of the brine-water is similar to that of the ocean water. 7.Dust • Provide workers with protective gear, e.g. masks. •Use sea water to sprinkle the site during site clearance. 8. Fire • Put or place fire extinguishers at strategic positions within the hotel premises to combat fires in case of any outbreaks. •Ensure that an alarm/siren system is installed within the hotel premises to warn residents of any impending danger or disaster. •Have a well equipped first aid kit within the hotel to aid in fast handling of casualties.
