THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO- ORDINATION ACT

(No. 8 of 1999)

SETTLEMENT


PURSUANT to section 59 of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act, 1999, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the above proposed project. The Proponent Longonot A and B Settlement Scheme, proposes to degazette Longonot A and B settlement schemes each measuring 96 acres from the current ownership of mount Longonot National Park which is managed by Kenya Wildlife Service to the individual ownership by the families already living in the settlement scheme. Longonot A site is located immediately before the park main gate on either side of the road leading to the national park and Longonot B is located on eastern side of the park facing Mai Mahiu town right on the boundary of the park. The scope of the work will comprise land surveying, beaconing and demarcations, land allocation to the beneficiaries and issuance of tittle deeds in Naivasha sub-county, Nakuru County. The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation measures: Possible Impacts Proposed Mitigation measures Loss of biodiversity • Ensure that only land set aside for the resettlement is used. Environmental degradation and deforestation • Set aside 10 % of all parcels for tree cover and sensitize the occupants on importance of planting of trees. Human wildlife conflict • Ensure that the residents adopt compatible land use practices to reduce human wildlife conflict. Incompatible land use practices • Sensitize the occupants of the degazetted land not to introduce new land use practices that may be incompatible within the area. Indiscriminate selling of land • Sensitize the beneficiaries not to indiscriminately sell their land upon receiving their individual ownership documents. Spread of invasive species • Sensitize the occupiers of the scheme not to introduce alien species into the area. Increased poaching • Sensitize the residents of the schemes to respect and abide with the wildlife management and conservation laws that prohibit poaching Encroachment of the park • Sensitize the occupiers of the schemes to respect park boundaries and to not encroach in to the ark. Increased waste generation • Sensitize the occupiers to have in place an integrated waste management stem. Increased vehicular pedestrian traffic • Sensitize the occupiers to control the speed of vehicular traffic to avoid pedestrian and vehicular accidents. Uncontrolled development • Comply with the physical planning laws by ensuring all developments are a roved. Blockage of wildlife dispersal area • The occupiers only to fence off the land set aside for their occupation and leave the other area for free movement of wildlife. Increased demand for energy • Sensitize the inhabitants of the settlement scheme on the need to conserve energy in their homes, encourage them to use renewable energy such as solar. Increased demand for water • Sensitize the inhabitants of the settlement scheme to put in place water conservation measures. Vegetation clearing for construction • Ensure only spaces required for construction of homes is cleared of vegetation and efforts put in place to leave green spaces in the occupied parcels of the settlement scheme.
