THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CO-ORDINATION ACT
(No. 8 of 1999)
REGULATION
PURSUANT to Regulation 21 of the Environmental Management
and Co-ordination (Impact Assessment and Audit) Regulations, 2003,
the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has
received an Environmental Impact Assessment Study Report for the
above proposed project.
The proponent Sophia Wanjiku John, proposes to construct a
modern five- floor hospital with a capacity of 60 beds, an incinerator,
associated facilities and amenities on plot L.R. No.
Ndumberi/Ndumberi/2958 at Ndumberi area off Kiambu Sub-County,
Kiambu County.
The following are the anticipated impacts and proposed mitigation
measures:

Noise and vibration • The noisy operation related works should
entirely be planned to be during day time i.e.
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Use of appropriate personal protective
equipments.
• Fix noisy equipment with silencers.
• Sensitize workers on dangers of excess noise.
Soil erosion • Excavate only areas to be affected by the
buildings.
• Cover/sprinkle water on loose soils.
• Excavated soil to be disposed into
designated dumping site.
• Provide soil conservation structures on the
areas prone to soil erosion mostly to reduce
impact by the run-off.
Increased surface • Provide rain water harvesting and storage
run-off facilities.
• Construction of proper storm drains that will
collect and dispose storm water from the

Air pollution • Water sprinkling on loose materials e.g.
Sand and soil.
• Use of dust screens.
• Equipment shall be properly tuned and
maintained.
• Discourage the use of wood fuel and
encourage the use of renewable energy
resources e.g. solar energy
• Use of appropriate personal protective
equipments.
Increased
water • Harvest rain-water.

• Recycling or re-use of water'where possible.
• Avoid unnecessary wastage.
• Use of taps that turn off automatically.
• Install a discharge meter at water outlets to
determine and monitor total water usage.
Road safety • Provide bill boards at the site/entrance to
notify motorists and general public about the
development.
• Employ well trained and experienced
drivers.
• No parking on road reserve.
• Observe traffic rules.
Occupational health • All workers should be provided with
and safety impacts protective gears.
• Provide First Aid Kit on site.
• Take insurance cover for workers on site.
• Provide adequate sanitary facilities.
• Provide fire extinguishers and hydrants
within the premises.
• Install lightning arrester.
Loss of biodiversity • Project construction should disturb as little
area as possible.
• Landscaping and planting of appropriate
vegetation cover e.g. grass, shrubs and
flowers.
• Prevent any form of pollution to the
environment.
Increased electricity • Use renewable energy sources e.g. solar
demand energy.
• Install energy saving bulbs.
• Switch off electrical equipment, appliances
and lights when not being used.
Solid waste • Provide facilities for proper handling and
management storage of waste.
• Segregate the waste at the site.
• Encourage re-use and re-cycling of wastes
where applicable.
• Engage services of a registered waste
handler to dispose the waste at designated
disposal sites.
Medical waste • Provide and ensure the usage of well labelled
generation color-coded bins and liners.
• Hazardous waste to be kept in safe,
designated, closed and covered areas

awaiting collection to the final disposal site.
• Proper use of an incinerator.
• Contract a registered medical waste handler
for collection and disposal of medical wastes
at designated sites.
Effluent disposal • Provide adequate and safe means of handling
all effluents from the facility by. connecting
to the sewerage system serving the entire
project area.
• Install an onsite treatment plant that can pre-
treat some effluent to recommended
standards before final discharge.
• Ensure regular monitoring of the sewage
discharged from the project to ensure that the
stipulated sewage/effluent discharge rules
and standards are not violated.
• Conduct regular Mspections and
maintenance for drainage pipe blockages or
damages and fix appropriately.

The National Environment Management Authority invites
members of the public to submit oral or written comments within
thirty (30) days from the date of publication of this notice to the
Director-General, NEMA, to assist the Authority in the decision
making process regarding this project.
